Rhapsody in rubber: Plastic Fantastic furniture by Studio JSPR

Reproduction furniture is a popular choice in hospitality establishments: as seating for hotels or as tables in restaurants for example. After all, having what looks like antiques – but which really aren’t – can lend some sort of cachet that guests find attractive. With the Plastic Fantastic Furniture Collection from Studio JSPR, though, you get furniture that has a period look but which is unmistakably modern in every way.

This is because every piece of furniture in this collection is treated with a special rubber layer called RealSkin. Hence, the end product looks like rubber or plastic. The dining chairs in the collection would look like something gracing the rooms of a historic castle or mansion except for the fact that it’s covered in rubber and brightly colored rubber at that. The pieces in the collection include dining chairs with or without armrests, a sofa, a club chair and sideboard among others. They can be delivered in any RAL color you wish so there’s no problem fitting them in with your restaurant’s color scheme. Manufactured by Casala, most of the items in the Plastic Fantastic series can be used outdoors as well as indoors. Studio JSPR was founded in 2005 by Dutch designer Jasper van Grootel. The company has a team of six designers, who strive to use innovative materials and designs to come up with something unusual, something that would represent a “high quality lifestyle setting with an unexpected touch.” They certainly did come up with something unusual with their Plastic Fantastic Furniture Collection.
