Cruising with the Lucca Dining Armchair

Furniture that’s meant to be used outdoors should of course be able to withstand changes in temperature. In commercial settings, especially, they shouldn’t just be durable, they should look good as well, something that will look pleasing to the customers. It’s okay to have furniture that isn’t too snazzy if it’s just going to be used during the occasional outdoor barbecue at home, but at restaurants, it’s a different story altogether. Café tables and chairs for al fresco dining and drinking that are sturdy and well-designed are ideal.

luccachair.jpgThe Lucca Dining Armchair by Spanish designer Joan Casas i Ortinez is an example of a fine-looking piece of furniture that is eminently suitable for outdoor locations. In fact, according to Design Within Reach, these chairs are being used at the deck of a prominent cruise line in Europe. It seems it’s very sturdy indeed, to withstand constant exposure to direct sunlight and salty wind. I’ve heard it said that the wind from the sea can do significant damage to furnishings and furniture over time, but it is apparent there are no such concerns about the Lucca chair suffering the same fate.

The frame and legs are made of polished anodized aluminum, which resists corrosion; some other parts of the chair are made with stainless steel, while the back is made of Textilene fabric, which promotes breathability. In addition, this fabric is resistant to mold and to ultraviolet rays. The curving armrests are good for relaxing one’s arms and wrists on as well. The Lucca Dining Armchair measures 36.5 inches high, 24.5 inches wide, and 24.5 inches deep. The seat height is 18 inches while the arm height is 26.5 inches.

Whether used as outdoor bar furniture on land or on a cruise ship at sea, this chair’s sophisticated, minimalist lines and curves are a visual pleasure, and it’s one that’s made to last.
