Comfortable seating for your restaurant’s reception area: Bras armchairs by Feiz Design Studio

feiz-chairs.jpgA collection of chairs that is named Bras would probably make one think of lingerie- or swimwear-themed furniture at the very least, or perhaps parts of a woman’s anatomy at the most. But no, you would be so wrong if you thought that it was either of that. It’s true though that the Bras chairs are named after a part of the body: the arm. It is a very apt name for a set of armchairs.

I am not sure what language the word comes from, but the designers, Khodi Feiz and Anneko-Feiz both live and work in the Netherlands. The reason I’m not assuming ‘bras’ is Dutch for ‘arm’ is because Khodi was born in Iran and was educated and worked in the United States before moving to the Netherlands. They run a design studio called Feiz Design.

They created this set of armchairs as a response to the question about why the arms on most other armchairs are straight. With these pieces, they sought to follow the arm’s natural gesture on an armchair. That is, it angles away from a user’s body with the forearm moving back toward it again. Come to think of it, that does make sense. It follows the user’s natural body contour, not the other way around.

The Bras armchairs are produced using wire cut EPS foam technology and natural felt coverings. Their volumes are quite sizeable, but according to the designers they are nevertheless very light and manageable. I’m not sure whether the chairs’ felt covering would make them suitable for use as outdoor reception seating at a restaurant. Maybe that’s possible, just don’t leave them out in the rain. If you want comfortable, natural-feeling armchairs for your diners, then consider the Bras chairs. They are available in several configurations that can be used together or separately as you wish.
